Los Angeles police confirmed the arrest of actor Kiefer Sutherland on Monday. Authorities took the Canadian-British star into custody following an alleged physical altercation with a ride-share driver in Hollywood.
Midnight Altercation Leads to Arrest
Officers responded to a call in Hollywood shortly after midnight. Police determined that Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle and physically assaulted the driver. The actor also made criminal threats toward the victim during the incident.
Law enforcement officials stated that Sutherland posted $50,000 bail several hours after his arrest. The 59-year-old actor gained his release from custody following the bail payment.
Police noted that the driver did not sustain injuries requiring medical attention. Representatives for Sutherland did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the incident.
Sutherland's Career and Family Background
Kiefer Sutherland achieved worldwide fame for his portrayal of counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer in the television series "24." The show enjoyed tremendous popularity between 2001 and 2010.
His film career includes memorable roles in several classic movies. Sutherland appeared in "The Lost Boys" in 1987, "Stand By Me" in 1986, and "The Three Musketeers" in 1993.
The actor comes from a distinguished Hollywood family. He is the son of actor Donald Sutherland, who passed away earlier this year.
Previous Legal Troubles for the Actor
This recent arrest marks another chapter in Sutherland's history with law enforcement. The actor faced legal challenges on multiple occasions in the past.
In May 2009, authorities charged Sutherland with third-degree assault. The incident involved an alleged altercation with fashion designer Jack McCollough following the Met Gala.
Both parties later issued a joint statement confirming resolution of the matter. Sutherland expressed regret about the incident at that time.
"I am sorry about what happened that night and sincerely regret that Mr. McCollough was injured," Sutherland stated previously.
McCollough responded positively to Sutherland's apology. "I appreciate Mr. Sutherland's statement and wish him well," the designer said.
In 2007, Sutherland received a 48-day jail sentence for driving under the influence. The conviction also included probation violation charges.
Police arrested Sutherland again in 2020 for making an illegal U-turn in Hollywood. The actor's legal history continues to draw public attention alongside his professional achievements.
Sutherland remains known for his television roles beyond "24." He portrayed the US president in the political drama series "Designated Survivor."
