Tom Holland's Spider-Man emblem tattoo on the bottom of his foot created an unexpected continuity issue during the production of 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', forcing the VFX team to digitally erase the inking from a scene where the 30-year-old actor appears naked and hanging upside down off a building.
Tattoo Discovery During Post-Production
Holland revealed the anecdote at the film's global fan event at the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, speaking to influencer Taya Miller. He explained that the tattoo, located on the sole of his foot, depicts the Spider-Man emblem from the first movie. During a scene where his character is unclothed and suspended from a building, the tattoo became visible in the final shot.
"I have a tattoo, and a fun little story is that it's on the bottom of my foot, it's the Spider-Man emblem from the first movie," Holland said. "I have it all across the bottom of my foot. And there's a scene in the movie where I have no clothes on, and I'm hanging off the side of a building. It was very awkward to film."
VFX Team's Digital Removal
The VFX team initially focused on removing wires but noticed the tattoo remained visible. Holland recounted: "In the VFX meetings, everyone was like, 'Yeah, the wires are gone, looks great'. But you could still see the tattoo on the bottom of my foot. They've gotten rid of it now, but there was a time when they were looking at the finished movie, and it was like, 'No, no, no, we need to paint that out'."
According to Female First UK, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' takes place after the events of 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', where the world has forgotten Spider-Man's identity. The film stars Holland opposite his real-life wife Zendaya, who plays MJ. Their off-screen relationship reportedly eased the filming of certain scenes.
Real-Life Couple Improves On-Screen Chemistry
Earlier this month, Holland told Empire magazine about a critical scene where he and Zendaya collaborated closely. "There's a very important scene in the film where we were shooting it and I kind of looked across to Zendaya and was like, 'Do you think this scene is working?' She kind of looked back at me and was like, 'I don't'. If I didn't have the relationship with Zendaya that I have, I would never dream of saying to an actress after her close-up, 'Do you think this is working?'"
Zendaya noted that this interaction demonstrated how much both actors have matured since first portraying their roles in 2017's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'. The couple's real-life marriage, which took place in 2022, has brought a new dynamic to their on-screen partnership.
