The makers of Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film 'Main Vaapas Aaunga' have released a new song titled 'Maskara', following the teaser and the earlier track 'Kya Kamaal Hai'. The song has been sung by Nilanjana Ghosh Dastidar and Vedang Raina.
Song Release and Director's Note
Imtiaz Ali shared 'Maskara' on his Instagram handle, captioning it, 'See...? Girls have thrown attitude at us down the ages!! (sic).' The song places the romance between Sharvari and Vedang at the center, while Rahman and Kamil bring their signature sound back to Ali's world of love and longing.
Vedang's Experience with the Song
Vedang Raina expressed that the song helped him connect with his character Keenu in a new way. He said, 'Maskara is incredibly close to my heart because it let me step into the character in a whole new way, not just as an actor, but through music. There's a raw innocence in what Keenu feels, and singing it made those emotions even more intimate and real for me. Recording with A. R. Rahman sir was surreal; his process pushes you to explore depths you didn't know existed. And to be part of Imtiaz Ali sir's world, where every emotion feels so lived-in, made this journey truly unforgettable.'
Singer Nilanjana's Reaction
Nilanjana Ghosh Dastidar also shared her experience of recording the track. She said, 'Recording this song under Rahman Sir's guidance was a truly humbling and surreal experience. His quiet brilliance and attention to every emotion and note taught me so much in such little time. Eternally honoured and blessed. The song itself feels very pure and honest to me, almost like it has a peppy life of its own.'
Fan Reactions on Reddit
Reactions to 'Maskara' on Reddit were mixed. Some users praised Vedang's singing abilities. One user wrote, 'Vedang sung this song?? He actually sounds playback singer level. Very impressive.' Another added, 'You should check out his other singing videos he's actually really good and sounds better without auto tune and music.'
A few users appreciated the track overall. One comment read, 'I like the song. Sounds fun.' Another said, 'I heard the song, liked it, and came here to see everyone else hating it.' However, others questioned the pairing of Sharvari and Vedang. One user commented, 'She looks older than him and they are giving siblings energy, she looks better with Diljit.' Another wrote, 'Sharvari feels misfit compared to Vedang. Vedang is correct casting for college student but Sharvari looks old. Also Vedang sounds like a dream in this song! It's a really cute song.'
Some comments focused on the styling in the song. One Reddit user wrote, 'Uhhmmm... am i the only one who finds sharvari's styling bland?' Another said, 'am i the only one who thinks the turban doesnt look good on vedang,' while a reply read, 'I think it looks sweet! He looks Punjabi surprisingly.'
