Congress Rajya Sabha MP and veteran journalist Rajeev Shukla recently offered a candid glimpse into the political lives of Bollywood icons Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha. In an interview with news agency ANI, Shukla reflected on their varied experiences as members of Parliament, highlighting both triumphs and tribulations in the political arena.
Amitabh Bachchan's Political Stint: A Missed Opportunity?
Shukla delved into Amitabh Bachchan's foray into politics, which began in 1984 when he joined the Indian National Congress at the behest of his close friend, then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Contesting from the Allahabad constituency, Bachchan won with a thumping majority, showcasing his immense popularity. However, his political career was abruptly cut short in 1987 when his name surfaced in the Bofors scandal, leading to his resignation.
Shukla expressed regret over this turn of events, stating that Bachchan could have emerged as a formidable political force had he persevered. "He was attacked just as any politician would have been, with VP Singh specifically targeting him. The Bofors case left him very disturbed and sad during that period," Shukla recalled. He noted that Bachchan was simultaneously shooting films like Main Azaad Hoon, Shahenshah, and Toofan, making it a distressing time that ultimately drove his exit from politics.
Jaya Bachchan: The Disciplinarian in Parliament
In contrast, Shukla painted a vivid picture of Jaya Bachchan's assertive presence in Parliament. As a Samajwadi Party member and Rajya Sabha MP, she is known for her strict and disciplined approach. "If she feels that someone is being even a bit undisciplined, she won't tolerate it. She will say what she wants to their face," Shukla emphasized.
He described instances where Jaya Bachchan would fearlessly scold ministers or even the chairman if she perceived something as wrong. Her regular attendance and unwavering commitment to parliamentary duties set her apart, with Shukla noting that she is one of the few film stars with impeccable attendance records.
Rekha's Minimal Parliamentary Presence
Shukla also touched upon Rekha's tenure as an MP, revealing that her involvement was notably limited. "Rekha ji used to come only once per session," he stated, contrasting her with Jaya Prada, whom he described as having evolved into a complete politician through hard work, despite lacking ample opportunities.
Additionally, Shukla highlighted that Rekha, along with Sachin Tendulkar, did not take up official housing after becoming MPs, while Lata Mangeshkar declined various facilities earmarked for Parliament members, including MPLADS funds, tickets, and housing.
