Sudip Sharma Rejects Directing SRK or Bachchan, Prioritizes Story Over Stardom
Sudip Sharma: No Desire to Direct SRK or Amitabh Bachchan

Sudip Sharma Rejects Directing Bollywood Icons SRK and Amitabh Bachchan

In the glittering world of Bollywood, where collaborations with megastars like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are often seen as career pinnacles, acclaimed writer and creator Sudip Sharma stands apart with a refreshingly different perspective. The mastermind behind gritty dramas such as Paatal Lok and Kohrra has openly declared that chasing star power has never been part of his creative ambition.

"I Never Had That Desire": Sudip Sharma's Candid Admission

In a recent conversation with Digital Commentary, Sudip Sharma made it clear that he does not dream of directing either of the two iconic actors. "No, I never had that desire. That's why I never even tried to do that kind of work," he stated emphatically. "I never came here to work with a specific star; I came here to tell my own story, to tell the kind of story I wanted to tell, to make films that I had watched and loved. That has never been a fascination for me."

He further revealed that even if such an opportunity presented itself, he would approach it with trepidation. "In fact, even if the opportunity came, I would be nervous because it's a huge responsibility," he shared, highlighting the immense pressure that comes with directing such legendary figures.

Creative Philosophy: Story First, Stardom Second

Elaborating on his creative philosophy, Sudip Sharma explained that writing with a star's image in mind fundamentally conflicts with his approach to storytelling. "You see, a star comes with a certain image, and then you have to build a vehicle around that image. I don't know how to do that," he admitted.

For Sharma, the character and narrative take precedence over celebrity status. "I want to write a character, and whoever comes to play it should immerse themselves in it. I don't want the responsibility of thinking about how the fans will react or how stardom will affect it," he emphasized. He pointed out that discussions often revolve more around the star than the film itself, something he has no interest in engaging with.

From NH10 to OTT Acclaim: Sudip Sharma's Journey

Sudip Sharma's career trajectory underscores his commitment to substance over spectacle. He made his feature screenwriting debut with NH10, a thriller headlined by Anushka Sharma that drew inspiration from real-life honor killing cases. This film marked the beginning of his journey in feature films, followed by critically acclaimed works like Udta Punjab and Sonchiriya, where he penned the screenplay and dialogues.

While these films received praise from critics, they did not achieve major box-office success. However, Sharma's breakthrough came in the OTT space, where he found his true calling. He is the creator, showrunner, and writer of the widely appreciated series Paatal Lok and Kohrra, with the latter seeing him co-direct Season 2, further expanding his creative involvement.

Throughout his career, Sudip Sharma has remained steadfast in his focus on narrative integrity, proving that compelling storytelling can thrive without relying on the allure of Bollywood's biggest stars. His stance serves as a powerful reminder that in filmmaking, the story should always be the star.
