South Indian cinema star Malavika Mohanan, who has been captivating audiences with her performances in films like 'The Raja Saab' with Prabhas and 'Master' with Vijay, recently opened up about her notably selective career in Hindi cinema. Despite making a powerful debut in Majid Majidi's 'Beyond the Clouds' in 2017, her appearances in Bollywood have been few, a choice she attributes to her creative instincts.
Creative Instinct Over Industry Size
In a candid conversation with India Today, Malavika addressed the question about her limited Hindi filmography. She clarified that her career decisions are driven by the script and her personal connection to a project, not by the perceived stature of an industry. "After 'Beyond the Clouds', I did receive a lot of Hindi film offers, but I've been very choosy," the actress stated.
She elaborated further, emphasizing an egalitarian view of Indian cinema. "Even if there's a big Hindi film, if I connect more with an interesting script from another industry, I'll go with what feels right to me. I don't see one industry as superior to another. I make my choices intuitively, and while I'd love to do more Hindi films, it has to excite me creatively," Malavika added.
Balancing Pan-India Projects
Malavika Mohanan's filmography is a testament to her pan-India appeal and selective approach. Following her debut, she has been part of significant South Indian projects such as the Mohanlal-starrer 'Hridayapoorvam'. Her latest release is the horror-comedy 'The Raja Saab', featuring Prabhas, where she plays a female lead alongside Nidhhi Agerwal and Riddhi Kumar. The film also stars veterans like Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani.
In 2024, she did venture back into Hindi cinema with the action thriller 'Yudhra', starring opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi and Raghav Juyal. This shows her willingness to take on Hindi projects when the role aligns with her creative vision.
Upcoming Ventures and Future Outlook
On the work front, Malavika Mohanan continues to diversify her portfolio. She is set to appear in the Tamil film 'Sardar 2', starring alongside Karthi. This upcoming project reinforces her commitment to working across industries based on the strength of the narrative.
Her stance highlights a growing trend among actors who prioritize content and directorial vision over linguistic or regional boundaries. For Malavika, the true marker of a worthwhile project is the creative excitement it generates, a principle that guides her eclectic and intentional career path.
