Gabrielle Union Reveals Persistent Financial Anxiety
Gabrielle Union, the renowned actress and wife of NBA legend Dwyane Wade, has opened up about her ongoing fears regarding money, despite her successful career and her husband's multimillion-dollar fortune. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Union admitted that she still struggles with financial insecurity, even after working hard for decades.
Union, known for her role in "Being Mary Jane," reflected on her first marriage, stating, "In that first marriage, neither one of us felt that our marriage should get in the way of our dating… I was paying all the bills. I was working my ass off. And I felt that's what comes, the spoils of riches." She added, "I struggle with that, still… I think I just have more responsibilities for my money."
Financial Responsibility from a Young Age
Union explained that her anxiety stems from being the primary breadwinner for her family from a young age. She said, "I get nervous like, 'Oh God, that movie didn't open; you know, what does that mean? Do I — Am I … Am I going to have enough to hold everybody up?'" This fear has led her to turn down smaller independent films, knowing that her finances would be affected.
She noted that her family has become accustomed to a certain lifestyle supported by her earnings, making it difficult for them to step down. This sense of responsibility has been a driving factor in her career decisions.
Equal Expense Sharing with Dwyane Wade
Despite Dwyane Wade's substantial wealth from his NBA career with the Miami Heat, Union and Wade divide their expenses equally at home. This arrangement has sparked heated debates among fans, but the couple remains content with their lifestyle. Union emphasized that they both lead public lives but keep their daughter, Kaavia Wade, private.
Union's candidness about her financial fears highlights the pressures faced by high-earning individuals, even those married to wealthy partners. Her story underscores the importance of financial independence and the challenges of managing wealth responsibly.
