Art Against Oppression, a students' forum at Jadavpur University, organized a screening of the National Award-winning documentary 'Ram Ke Naam' by acclaimed filmmaker Anand Patwardhan on Wednesday. The event took place amidst ongoing tensions on campus, with students emphasizing their commitment to preserving the university's democratic and harmonious ethos.

Srijata Bagchi, a sociology student and member of the forum, stated, 'We want to convey that JU's democratic and harmonious culture will remain untouched. This screening is a testament to our resolve to uphold free expression and secular values.' The documentary, which explores the communal polarization surrounding the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, was chosen to spark dialogue on religious tolerance and social justice.
Documentary's Significance
'Ram Ke Naam' won the National Film Award for Best Investigative Film in 1992. It critically examines the rise of Hindutva politics and its impact on India's secular fabric. By screening this film, students aimed to reaffirm the university's role as a space for critical thought and dissent.
The event was attended by students and faculty members, who engaged in a discussion afterward. Organizers noted that such initiatives are crucial in countering attempts to stifle academic freedom. 'We will continue to hold similar events to promote dialogue and resist any form of oppression,' said another forum member.
This screening comes at a time when Jadavpur University has been in the news for student protests against administrative decisions perceived as curbing democratic space. The forum's action underscores the student community's determination to protect their rights and the institution's legacy.
