Old-Time Resident Spots Rare Rickshaw Among Cars in Chandigarh
Returning home from a late evening walk at Leisure Valley, Sector 10, Chandigarh, Sanjeev Singh Bariana was surprised to see a cycle rickshaw parked among a fleet of cars in the market. Cycle rickshaws have been nearly extinct on Chandigarh roads for many years, making the sighting unexpected.
Curiosity Leads to a Nostalgic Reunion
Bariana waited for the rickshaw driver and soon recognized him as Vinod, the rickshaw-wallah who used to take him around Chandigarh during his college days more than 30 years ago. Excited, Bariana asked Vinod how he still pedals a rickshaw when almost none are left. Vinod smiled and explained that he has always been around since arriving from Uttar Pradesh decades ago.
Vinod's Story: Sleeping in Market Verandahs
Vinod sleeps in the verandah of the market, as he has done since arriving in the city. When asked if present shopkeepers allow him to stay, Vinod sighed and said things are not the same, but some still permit him and others to stay overnight. Most of his old companions have returned to Uttar Pradesh or moved to other jobs, but a few old-timers remain.
Personal Use of the Rickshaw
Bariana asked Vinod where he finds customers now. Vinod laughed and replied, "Arrey, I cannot afford to buy a car or take a loan to buy a two-wheeler. So, I am happy using this rickshaw as my personal vehicle." This revelation highlights the practical adaptation of a traditional mode of transport in modern times.
