Saif Ali Khan Was Not First Choice for Cocktail; Ranbir, Imran Turned It Down
Saif Ali Khan Was Not First Choice for Cocktail Role

As 'Cocktail 2', starring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon, hits theatres, fans of the franchise can't help but look back fondly at the original 2012 film featuring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty. While the first 'Cocktail' remains a beloved take on modern relationships, not many know that Saif Ali Khan wasn't the first choice as Gautam.

How Saif Ali Khan Got the Role in 'Cocktail'

In a recent conversation with Variety India, Saif Ali Khan revealed that the makers had already locked Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty for the film but were struggling to find their leading man. "They had Deepika and Diana, but they couldn't get a hero to play the part, probably because Veronica's part is so delicious," Saif said, referring to Deepika's iconic character.

He further shared, "I remember some names they asked. I think they had asked Imran (Khan) and they had asked Ranbir (Kapoor). And they had asked a few people, and I said, 'Okay, chal, I'll do it.' And I think they should all be very thankful I did (laughs). That's my story. Yeah, because I had great fun. I love Homi (Adajania). And we had a good time doing it."

Ranbir Kapoor Also Advised Deepika Padukone Against the Film

Interestingly, apart from turning down the role himself, Ranbir Kapoor reportedly also suggested that Deepika Padukone skip the project. The actress, however, trusted her instincts and went on to deliver one of the most memorable performances of her career. Following the film's release, fans began calling her "Veronica" instead of Deepika. Ranbir Kapoor later admitted that his judgement about the film had been wrong.
