Sally Field, the celebrated actress known for her versatile portfolio spanning romantic comedies, action films, and thrillers, has a clear rule when it comes to choosing roles: she never accepts stories centered on women trying to find a man. In a recent interview with PEOPLE promoting her latest film, 'Remarkably Bright Creatures,' Field explained that this preference has remained unchanged throughout her career.
Sally Field on the Roles She Avoids
During the interview, Field stated, 'I never take to stories about women that are trying to find a man. I didn't like it then, and it doesn't appeal to me now, because I think women are about so much more.' This stance reflects her belief in portraying women as multifaceted individuals beyond romantic pursuits.
The actress also delved into how acting has helped her channel intense emotions. Growing up in the 1950s, Field had a complicated relationship with her parents, which left her 'filled with rage.' She credited acting coach Lee Strasberg with teaching her to tap into those feelings without being consumed by them. 'I was filled with rage. Really filled with rage, and it was working with Lee Strasberg that allowed me to begin to tap into it, to not let it devour me,' she shared.
Applying the Method to Iconic Roles
Field applied this emotional technique to one of her most famous roles in 'Norma Rae,' with encouragement from director Marty Ritt. The film, which earned her an Academy Award, showcases her ability to transform personal turmoil into powerful performance.
