Union Minister C R Patil announced on Thursday that a plan is being prepared to desilt the Tungabhadra dam, a major reservoir in Karnataka. Patil emphasized that the responsibility for executing the project lies with the chief ministers of the three riparian states—Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
Desilting Plan Details
Speaking to reporters, Patil stated that the desilting initiative aims to restore the dam's storage capacity, which has been significantly reduced due to silt accumulation over decades. The minister did not provide a specific timeline or cost estimate but said the plan would be shared with the state governments soon.
Impact on Water Supply
The Tungabhadra dam, built across the Tungabhadra River, is a key source of irrigation and drinking water for millions in the region. Reduced storage capacity has led to water shortages in recent years, affecting agriculture and domestic use. According to official data, the dam's live storage has decreased by nearly 30% since its construction in the 1950s.
Political Coordination
Patil urged the chief ministers to collaborate on the project, noting that desilting would benefit all three states. “The onus is on all chief ministers from the three riparian states to implement the project,” he said. The minister also highlighted the need for sustainable measures to prevent future siltation.
