Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli embarked on a spiritual visit to the historic Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, this Sunday. He was accompanied by his family members, Indian cricket all-rounder Washington Sundar, and ACA representative Vishnu.
A Sacred Welcome and Traditional Ceremonies
The distinguished guests were formally received by temple officials upon their arrival. The welcoming party included Devasthanam deputy executive officer Singam Radha, assistant executive officer K. Tirumaleswara Rao, and supervisory officer Kanchi Murthy. The visit commenced with a significant and traditional ritual known as Kappasthambham Alingana, which involves embracing a sacred pillar in the temple complex.
Darshan Amidst Vedic Hymns and Honours
Following the pillar ceremony, Kohli and his group proceeded for darshan (holy viewing) of the deity. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as Vedic scholars recited hymns, accompanied by the melodic sounds of the nadaswaram (a traditional wind instrument) and other Vedic chants.
As a mark of honour and blessing, the temple administration presented the visitors with sacred gifts. They were honoured with the Swamy's Shesha Vastra, a ceremonial cloth, along with prasadams (blessed offerings) and a portrait of the deity.
A Spiritual Retreat for the Cricket Star
This visit highlights a moment of personal faith and cultural connection for one of India's most celebrated sports icons. The Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Simhachalam is a renowned pilgrimage site, and Kohli's visit, along with fellow cricketer Washington Sundar, underscores the deep-rooted spiritual practices often observed by public figures in India. The event was a quiet yet significant spiritual interlude, drawing attention to the temple's traditions and rituals.
