Allegations of Fraud in Gruha Lakshmi Scheme
BJP leader and former Karnataka minister R Ashoka has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged irregularities in the state government's Gruha Lakshmi scheme. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ashoka claimed that payments were made to fake accounts, and a big gang of officials and politicians is behind it.
The Gruha Lakshmi scheme, a flagship program of the Karnataka government, provides financial assistance of Rs 2,000 per month to women heads of households. However, Ashoka alleged that the scheme has been plagued by large-scale fraud, with fake beneficiaries being enrolled and funds being siphoned off.
Ashoka's Call for Investigation
Ashoka urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to order an SIT probe immediately to uncover the truth. He said, "Payments were made to fake accounts, and a big gang of officials and politicians is behind it. The government must act swiftly to punish the guilty." He also questioned the transparency of the scheme's implementation and demanded a thorough audit.
The BJP leader further alleged that the ruling Congress party is protecting those involved in the scam. He warned that if the government fails to act, the BJP will launch a statewide agitation.
Government's Response
In response, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. He stated that the scheme is being implemented transparently and that all payments are made through a robust digital system. Shivakumar added that the government is open to any inquiry but accused the BJP of creating a ruckus without evidence.
Impact on Beneficiaries
The Gruha Lakshmi scheme benefits over 1.2 crore women in Karnataka, making it one of the largest direct benefit transfer programs in the state. Any disruption or scandal could affect the livelihoods of millions. Ashoka's demand for an SIT probe has raised concerns about the scheme's integrity, with opposition parties calling for a comprehensive investigation.
As the political slugfest continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the funds reach genuine beneficiaries. The state government has assured that it will take strict action if any irregularities are found.
