Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to 9 Months Jail in Romania for Cannabis Possession
Wiz Khalifa Gets 9-Month Jail Term in Romania Drug Case

In a significant legal development, a Romanian court has handed down a prison sentence to renowned American rapper Wiz Khalifa. The Constanta Court of Appeal on Thursday sentenced the artist to nine months in jail for drug possession, concluding a case that began over a year ago following his performance at a music festival.

The Incident and Initial Ruling

The case stems from an incident in July 2024 at the 'Beach, Please!' Festival held in Costinesti, a coastal resort in Constanta County. According to reports, the 38-year-old rapper, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was allegedly seen smoking cannabis on stage during his performance. He was reportedly singing his hit track "Young, Wild & Free" while smoking a large, hand-rolled cigarette.

Romanian police subsequently stopped and charged him. Prosecutors stated that Khalifa was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis and had consumed some during the festival act. Earlier, in April, a lower court in Constanta County had issued him a criminal fine of 3,600 lei (approximately $830) for illegal possession. However, prosecutors appealed this decision, seeking a harsher punishment.

Final Verdict and Romania's Strict Drug Laws

The appeal court's decision this week is final. Khalifa was convicted of "possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption." This verdict aligns with Romania's notoriously stringent narcotics legislation, which is among the harshest in Europe.

Under Romanian law, the possession of cannabis for personal use is a criminal offence. It can lead to a prison sentence ranging from three months to two years, or a substantial financial penalty. The court's move to replace the initial fine with a jail term underscores the serious approach taken by the authorities.

Will the Rapper Serve Time in Romania?

A major question now looms over the enforcement of this sentence. It remains unclear whether Wiz Khalifa will actually serve time in a Romanian prison. As a US citizen who does not reside in Romania, his extradition would be a complex process.

There is no clear update on whether Romanian authorities will file an extradition request to bring him back to the country to serve his sentence. The rapper, who rose to fame with mixtapes like "Kush Orange Juice," has not publicly commented on the latest ruling. The international music community and his fans are now watching closely to see how this legal saga unfolds.
