Ghabadkund Movie Review: Interesting start of a universe, but not entirely gripping

The Marvel Cinematic Universe arguably gave way to similar steps being taken in other film industries. Bollywood jumped on the trend with the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe and Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe. Now, Marathi cinema has followed suit with the makers of Ghabadkund calling it the first film in their Marathi Cinematic Universe. We’ll get to the concept later. First, about the movie.
Pritam SK Patil’s Ghabadkund is a mix of fantasy, mystery, horror, and thriller elements. The basic premise revolves around a stolen treasure that has been lost to time, with a group of people pulling all stops to retrieve it. Years ago, in a village lived a rich and promiscuous landlord whose gold was stolen by a group of outlaws and palace burnt to ashes after. While the outlaws had noble intentions, one of them didn’t. Dhurya turned back-stabber and tried fleeing with the gold, only to fall in a well and die with it. Years later, a group of people familiar with this local legend is trying to unearth the gold. For that, they need the help of Dilya (Sandeep Pathak) because he is the only one who can hear the calls of the ghost of the well. So begins this quest for the lost gold.
For those who have watched Alyad Palyad, Ghabadkund will bring back some memories. The idea of creating a Marathi cinematic universe deserves full marks. The makers hopefully have a proper plan drawn out for what’s to follow in this universe. The concept of the movie is interesting, although it is heavily influenced by films ranging from Indiana Jones to Tumbbad and Stree. The influences can be ignored if the film is totally gripping, which Ghabadkund is not. It’s good in bits and pieces. It spends too much time establishing its premise, and the way things just fall into place is too convenient. Most characters have no context beyond being ‘required’ for the quest. The film is also exceptionally dark in terms of lighting.
In the acting department, Sandeep Pathak and Shashank Shende stand out. Pathak delivers what’s required of him. He is the emotional and moral anchor of this story, and the only one who doesn’t come across as loud or caricaturish. Long story short, Ghabadkund isn’t gripping as an individual film, but it’s interesting as the beginning of something new in Marathi cinema. How the makers take this ahead? That’s something we’ll have to wait and watch for. If you plan to watch this one, don’t go expecting the moon. That way, you’ll walk out with a neutral reaction.

- Bandar – Crime & Thriller | 2h 16m | 3.5 Critic's Rating | 3.0 Users' Rating – This is not an easy film to watch. It is disturbing, repulsive and occasionally repetitive. Think of horror sensation ‘obsession’ in an Anurag Kashyap universe. But that discomfort is precisely the point.
