Christopher Nolan Reveals Nonlinear Structure of 'The Odyssey' Film
Nolan Explains 'The Odyssey' Film's Nonlinear Story

Christopher Nolan opened up about his upcoming film adaptation of Homer's ancient epic, 'The Odyssey,' during an appearance on 'The Late Show.' The acclaimed director explained how the film approaches the classic tale and its nonlinear structure, drawing parallels between Greek heroes and modern comic book culture.

Nolan Explains the Story Structure

Speaking on 'The Late Show,' Nolan said Homer's epic already employs an unconventional narrative technique. 'Well, the story's written in a nonlinear way. It's the original kind of nonlinear narrative. You start kind of halfway through the story,' he stated. The director revealed that the film begins in Ithaca, where Odysseus has not yet returned home after the Trojan War.

'We start in Ithaca. We start with the Song of Odysseus,' Nolan explained. 'Everyone is sitting there going, OK, we know the Trojan War ended 10 years ago. Where is he? He hasn't come back.' He added that Odysseus has been absent for two decades, saying, 'He left 20 years ago. And things are not altogether wonderful in his kingdom.'

Penelope's Struggle and the Suitors

Nolan described the predicament of Penelope, Odysseus's wife, in Ithaca. 'Penelope's having to put off all these suitors who want to be the new king,' he said. The director confirmed that Anne Hathaway, with whom he has collaborated previously, portrays Penelope. 'So Penelope is played by Anne Hathaway, who I've also worked with a couple of times before,' Nolan noted.

Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. 'Her son is played by Tom Holland, who's so amazing, who I've not worked with before, but would love to work with again,' Nolan said. 'He's just an incredible talent.' Robert Pattinson portrays the lead suitor in Ithaca. Nolan remarked, 'Hathaway and Holland are holding the fort in Ithaca, fending off the suitors, the lead suitors played by Rob Pattinson.'

Greek Heroes as Original Superheroes

Nolan also discussed the enduring influence of Homer's work on contemporary culture. 'They're the original superheroes,' he said of Greek heroes. 'Even comic book culture, whether you're talking about Marvel or DC or all the rest, a lot of it comes pretty directly from the Homeric epics.' He added that Homer remains an enigmatic figure. 'Nobody really knows who this person was or whether it was more than one person,' he said.

The director called Homer 'the marvel of its day' and noted that modern comics still carry the desire for audiences to feel that gods could walk among us. 'The Odyssey' is set to bring this ancient story to the big screen with a star-studded cast, promising a fresh take on a timeless narrative.
