Kannada Development Authority Chairperson Addresses Persistent Women's Issues in India
In a stark revelation at an International Women's Day celebration in Mangaluru, Prof Purushothama Bilimale, chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), highlighted the unchanging plight of women across the nation. He pointed out that a staggering 72% of women in India are actively engaged in agriculture, yet this critical sector often overlooks their contributions and rights.
Alarming Statistics on Malnutrition and Societal Challenges
Prof Bilimale further emphasized the severe health crises affecting women and children, noting that 54% of women and 52% of children suffer from malnutrition. This data underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve nutritional outcomes and overall well-being in vulnerable populations.
The event, organized by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and the department of Kannada and culture at Kalaangann in Shaktinagar, also marked the launch of a collection of poems and stories translated from Konkani to Kannada. This cultural initiative aims to bridge linguistic gaps and promote literary diversity.
Political Exclusion and the Call for Female Leadership
Reflecting on political representation, Prof Bilimale criticized the absence of a female chief minister in Karnataka over its 70-year history as a state. "We celebrate Women's Day amidst many challenges faced by women. Despite any celebration, women continue to face constant oppression in a male-dominated society," he stated, urging for greater inclusivity in governance.
Echoing this sentiment, assembly speaker UT Khader stressed the immense contribution of women to societal development. "It is impossible to strengthen the nation by excluding 50% of women," he asserted. Khader advocated for women's active participation in all fields, highlighting their inherent leadership qualities and ability to unite families, which he believes can translate into stronger political and social structures.
Efforts to Promote Konkani Literature and Cultural Exchange
MLC Ivan D'Souza discussed the significant role of the Konkani Sahitya Academy in the state, with ongoing efforts to develop it further. He mentioned plans to establish a Konkani Academy abroad, aiming to foster global cultural exchanges and preserve linguistic heritage.
The event was attended by notable figures including Karnataka Ecotourism Development Board chairperson Shalet Lavina Pinto and Konkani Sahitya Academy chairman Joachim Stany Alvares, underscoring the collaborative spirit in addressing women's issues and promoting cultural initiatives.
As the nation observes Women's Day, these discussions highlight the critical need for systemic changes to empower women, improve health outcomes, and ensure equitable representation in all spheres of life.
