Kolhapur's Mahalaxmi Temple Implements Innovative Cool Coat Solution to Combat Summer Heat
In a significant move to enhance visitor comfort, the pavements leading to the renowned Mahalaxmi temple in Kolhapur are being treated with heat-resistant paints, commonly known as cool coats. This initiative aims to substantially reduce surface temperatures by an impressive 10-12 degrees Celsius, offering much-needed relief to the countless devotees who often endure long waiting times in queues to seek darshan of the goddess.
Strategic Partnership and CSR Initiative Drive the Project
The Paschim Maharashtra Devasthan Samiti (PMDS), the official management body overseeing the Mahalaxmi temple, has strategically collaborated with the Maratha Entrepreneur Association to execute this cooling project. The application of the heat-resistant paints is being facilitated through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, highlighting a community-driven approach to addressing environmental challenges.
Addressing Seasonal Challenges with Innovative Alternatives
Traditionally, during the scorching summer months, devotees have had to stand on unbearably hot surfaces while waiting in line. Annually, the PMDS has erected sun shades to provide some respite from the intense heat. However, this year, due to ongoing construction and renovation works within the temple premises, it will not be feasible to install sun shades across the entire area. Consequently, the decision was made to implement the cool coat solution on the pathways as a practical and effective alternative.
"Typically, April brings soaring temperatures. While we install sun shades every year, restrictions are in place this time. We conducted a cool coating experiment two years ago, and it demonstrated significant effectiveness by reducing temperatures by 10-12°C," explained Shivraj Naikawde, Secretary of the PMDS.
Comprehensive Summer Preparedness Measures
In addition to the cool coat application, the temple management has proactively arranged for supplementary amenities to combat the summer heat. These include the provision of cool drinking water stations and the installation of fans along the queue areas. The Mahalaxmi temple attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each weekend, with numbers anticipated to surge further during the summer vacation weekends starting from late April.
Proven Technology and Its Practical Application
The cool coating technology, which has also been successfully tested at the Tirupati Tirumala temple, involves the use of specialized paints composed of polymers. These paints are designed to reflect sunlight, thereby diminishing the intensity of surface heating. Although generally waterproof, the coatings may gradually fade over time due to friction from foot traffic, necessitating periodic reapplication to maintain optimal performance.
This innovative step not only showcases a commitment to visitor welfare but also sets a precedent for other religious and public spaces facing similar climatic challenges, blending traditional devotion with modern technological solutions for a more comfortable spiritual experience.
