Mangaluru Hospital's Meal Project Adapts to LPG Shortage with Firewood Cooking
In response to a severe LPG shortage, the Karunya meal project at District Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru has made a significant operational shift, turning to firewood cooking to ensure the uninterrupted provision of dinner to patient attendants. This change highlights the challenges faced by charitable initiatives in maintaining essential services amid resource constraints.
Eight Years of Service and Recent Expansion
For the past eight years, M-Friends Charitable Trust has diligently served dinner daily to approximately 400 individuals at the hospital. Over the last six months, the trust expanded its compassionate outreach, extending the meal service to Lady Goschen Hospital, thereby broadening its impact on the community's healthcare support system.
Menu Adjustments Due to LPG Crisis
Previously, the project offered a varied menu with chapati and curry served five days a week, complemented by idlis and saaru on two days. However, the recent LPG crisis has forced the team to streamline its offerings. Currently, the menu is limited to veg biryani or rice and sambar, as firewood cooking poses limitations compared to gas-based methods.
The project had run smoothly and ceaselessly until the LPG shortage disrupted its kitchen operations, underscoring the vulnerability of such initiatives to external supply issues.
Appeal for Support to Resume Full Service
To address the crisis, the trust has appealed to the district administration and potential donors for assistance. Specifically, they are seeking four to five gas cylinders to resolve the LPG issue. This support would enable the project to resume preparing idlis and chapatis as before, restoring the full range of nutritious meals that beneficiaries have come to rely on.
Until the LPG supply is stabilized, the team remains committed to using firewood as a temporary solution, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. This situation serves as a reminder of the critical role that community support and resource management play in sustaining charitable efforts, especially in healthcare settings where meal services provide vital comfort to patient attendants.
