Navi Mumbai: A significant meeting took place on Thursday at the Cidco Exhibition Centre in Vashi, chaired by minister Ganesh Naik, to devise an action plan addressing the electricity shortage and water-related issues in the region. During the meeting, Naik instructed Mahavitaran officials to stabilize the electricity supply in Navi Mumbai, which has been plagued by unscheduled power outages with the onset of summer. These outages have sparked protests across the city, prompting Naik's intervention.
Meeting Participants and Concerns
The meeting was attended by Navi Mumbai mayor Sujata Patil, deputy mayor Dashrath Bhagat, house chief Sagar Naik, municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde, superintendent engineer of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) D R Patil, along with senior municipal office bearers and public representatives. Public representatives raised concerns about power supply from their respective areas, highlighting that MSEDCL lacks sufficient electrical equipment and cables for repair work.
Minister's Directives
Naik directed MSEDCL to arrange the required manpower and electrical materials to ensure a regular power supply. He also instructed officials to lodge police complaints against those who resort to hooliganism to obtain electricity cables. Additionally, he stated that the government would make funds available for MSEDCL if necessary.
MSEDCL's Response
D R Patil informed that electricity demand in Navi Mumbai has risen by 30% due to increasing heat. He noted that power interruptions have grown because breakdowns are occurring more frequently, particularly on LT lines. He said staffing levels for electrical workers have been increased and that 10 km of cable will be available for Navi Mumbai shortly. Patil further mentioned that the Rabale substation will start soon, which should help stabilize the supply. He also acknowledged complaints that Mahavitaran officials do not answer citizens' calls during outages and announced that a local complaint registration centre will be established.
Public Outrage
Navi Mumbai residents are aghast over the frequent power outages since summer began, with many complaining that they are forced to spend sleepless nights. The meeting aimed to address these grievances and ensure a more reliable electricity supply in the future.
