PAU Trains Rural Women in Summer Drink Making

The College of Community Science at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) recently conducted a series of hands-on training sessions in the villages of Halwara, Akalgarh, Boparai Kalan, Purain, and Kullewal. The initiative was part of the All-India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP) and focused on preparing healthy summer beverages such as watermelon mint cooler, mulberry juice, bael juice, chana sattu, and lemonade.

Promoting Local Ingredients for Summer Hydration

Dr. Ritu Mittal Gupta, unit coordinator for the project, emphasized that the training was tailored to the prevailing weather conditions. The goal was to encourage the use of locally available raw materials to create nutritious and refreshing drinks in all adopted villages. Experts highlighted the importance of these beverages in maintaining hydration, preventing heat stress, and boosting nutritional intake during the hot summer months.

Distribution of Educational Material and Seeds

Dr. Renuka Aggarwal and Dr. Shivani Rana noted that educational literature and seed kits were distributed among participants. Dr. Prachi Bisht, along with Dr. Prerna Kapila, elaborated on the significance of kitchen gardening. They explained that this initiative is a continuation of efforts over the past five years, during which seasonal vegetable seeds have been regularly provided to enhance household-level nutritional security.

Practical Demonstrations and Community Participation

The training sessions included practical demonstrations and active involvement of rural women, focusing on simple, low-cost, and nutritious beverage preparation. In addition to promoting healthy dietary practices, participants were encouraged to adopt kitchen gardening for year-round access to fresh and safe vegetables. Young professionals conducted the sessions, offering detailed guidance and hands-on experience.

Village sarpanches expressed gratitude to the AICRP team for their need-based efforts. Enthusiastic participation from rural women was recorded across all five villages, reflecting the community's commitment to improving nutrition and health.
