Udupi Diver Receives Advanced Underwater Communication Device for Rescue Missions

In a significant boost to underwater rescue operations in Karnataka, diver and social worker Eshwar Malpe has been equipped with a state-of-the-art underwater communication device valued at approximately Rs 7 lakh. The equipment was formally handed over by Rev Fr Denis D'Sa, parish priest of St Anne Church in Thottam, during a ceremony on Sunday.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency in Rescue Work

The device, donated by the Michael D'Souza Charitable Trust based in Mangaluru, addresses critical safety gaps faced by divers during rescue missions. Eshwar Malpe, who has participated in numerous rescue operations across the state to locate and save drowning victims, highlighted the risks associated with traditional methods. "When retrieving people who fell into water, divers often have to descend 30 to 40 feet. Communication with people above the surface is usually limited to a rope signal system, which has put my life at risk on many occasions," he explained.

This new technology allows for real-time communication between the diver and surface teams, significantly improving coordination and reducing hazards during emergencies.

A Gesture of Humanity and Recognition

Rev Fr Denis D'Sa emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the donation, stating that responding to the difficulties of people who stand by those suffering in society is an act of humanity. He also revealed that Michael D'Souza has pledged future support for constructing a new house for Eshwar, whose current residence is in poor condition.

Eshwar expressed deep gratitude for the generosity, noting that his rescue team operates without regard to caste or religion. "Our priority is always to save the person. Through people's prayers and blessings, we have managed to return safely from the water," he said.

Background and Impact of the Initiative

The donation followed an assessment by Trust members Oswald Rodrigues, Steven Pinto, and Fr. Denis, who visited Eshwar's home after learning about his work through social media and YouTube. Recognizing the urgent need for modern equipment, they swiftly arranged for the communication device.

Oswald Rodrigues expressed hope that this equipment will enable Eshwar to assist many more individuals in distress, underscoring the Trust's commitment to supporting community heroes.

This initiative not only enhances rescue capabilities but also sets a precedent for recognizing and aiding those who risk their lives for others, fostering a culture of safety and compassion in emergency response efforts.
