Woman, 75, Dies After Snake Bite in Thiruvananthapuram Home Compound

A tragic incident occurred in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning, resulting in the death of a 75-year-old woman after she was bitten by a snake in her house compound. The deceased has been identified as Sudharma, a resident of Karatte Peedtikulam Melathil.

Details of the Incident

According to relatives, Sudharma was engaged in routine household chores around 8 am when she was bitten on her right leg near a well on her premises. She collapsed soon after the bite, prompting relatives and neighbours to rush her to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Suspected Snake Species and Official Response

However, a forest department official stated that, based on the nature of the wound, it is suspected to be an 'anali', commonly known as Russell's viper. This is a highly venomous species frequently found in the region.

Following the incident, forest and health department officials have issued urgent warnings to the public to remain vigilant. With the onset of summer, snakes are more likely to emerge from their burrows in search of water and prey.

Safety Recommendations for Residents

Officials have advised residents to take several precautions to prevent similar incidents:

  • Keep premises clean and free of clutter that might attract snakes.
  • Avoid areas with dense vegetation where snakes may hide.
  • Exercise extreme caution near wells, water sources, and poorly lit surroundings.
  • Report any snake sightings to local authorities immediately for safe removal.

This incident underscores the importance of public awareness and safety measures during the summer months when snake activity increases. Authorities are continuing their investigations to confirm the snake species and assess any further risks in the area.
