Woman, 75, Dies After Snake Bite in Thiruvananthapuram Home Compound
A tragic incident occurred in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning, resulting in the death of a 75-year-old woman after she was bitten by a snake in her house compound. The deceased has been identified as Sudharma, a resident of Karatte Peedtikulam Melathil.
Details of the Incident
According to relatives, Sudharma was engaged in routine household chores around 8 am when she was bitten on her right leg near a well on her premises. She collapsed soon after the bite, prompting relatives and neighbours to rush her to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The body has been shifted to the hospital mortuary and will be handed over to relatives after a postmortem examination. Authorities have not yet officially identified the species of the snake involved in the attack.
Suspected Snake Species and Official Response
However, a forest department official stated that, based on the nature of the wound, it is suspected to be an 'anali', commonly known as Russell's viper. This is a highly venomous species frequently found in the region.
Following the incident, forest and health department officials have issued urgent warnings to the public to remain vigilant. With the onset of summer, snakes are more likely to emerge from their burrows in search of water and prey.
