Chennai: YouTuber Savukku Shankar has moved the Madras High Court seeking bail in connection with an attempt-to-murder case registered against him during his imprisonment in Puzhal central prison. The case was lodged on April 8 while Shankar was already in custody.
Court Proceedings
Admitting the plea, Justice L Victoria Gowri directed the prosecution to file their reply by May 7 and adjourned the hearing. The court stated that the plea would be disposed of at the next hearing. Shankar's legal counsel argued that the allegations were baseless and that the FIR was an attempt to harass him.
Details of the FIR
According to the petition, the FIR was registered against Shankar and four others under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sections include:
- Section 296(b): Uttering obscene words
- Section 125: Indulging in acts endangering the personal safety of others
- Section 132: Using criminal force to deter a public servant
- Section 109(1): Attempt to murder
- Section 351(3): Criminal intimidation
Shankar's counsel contended that the FIR was filed maliciously and that the YouTuber had been falsely implicated. The prosecution, however, opposed the bail plea, citing the seriousness of the charges.
Background
Savukku Shankar, a known YouTuber and social activist, has been involved in several legal cases. He was previously arrested on charges related to his online content. The current attempt-to-murder case allegedly stems from an incident inside the prison, though details remain unclear. The court has yet to decide on the bail application, with the next hearing scheduled for May 7.
