AIIMS Delhi Probe into Kota C-Section Deaths Report Due Tuesday

AIIMS Delhi has concluded its investigation into the deaths of women following C-section deliveries at government hospitals in Kota, with the death toll now reaching five. The report from the high-level committee is anticipated by Tuesday.

Government Awaits Findings

A senior official from the medical education department stated that the government is awaiting the findings, which will help determine the subsequent course of action. The inquiry was initiated amid concerns over potential lapses in post-operative care, infection control, and emergency response systems at New Medical College Hospital and JK Lon Hospital.

Timeline of Events

The first death occurred on May 5, when 26-year-old Payal died after her condition deteriorated following a C-section. At least eight other postnatal women have also reportedly developed infections.

Committee Inspection

The seven-member high-level committee, constituted by the Union Health Ministry, arrived in Kota on Saturday. It comprised six specialists from AIIMS Delhi in surgery, microbiology, anaesthesia, paediatrics, hospital administration, and gynaecology, along with one expert from AIIMS Jodhpur. The team inspected JK Lon Hospital, New Medical College Hospital, and the Super Specialty Block, reviewing medical records, treatment protocols, and hospital infrastructure. They also examined records of two deceased women, including nursing notes, diagnostic reports, patient history, and treatment details.

Government Response

The Rajasthan government has dispatched expert and specialist doctors from Jaipur to assist local teams treating critically ill women in intensive care. However, the source of the infections has not yet been identified.
