Massive Bee Swarm Disrupts Funeral Rites in Kolhapur, Injuring Dozens
A peaceful funeral ceremony turned into a scene of panic and chaos in Kolhapur district on Wednesday morning when thousands of bees suddenly swarmed and attacked a crowd at a crematorium in Yelawade village. The incident resulted in more than 55 people being stung, with twelve requiring hospitalization in serious condition.
Chaos During Traditional Funeral Observance
The attack occurred during the third-day funeral rites for 67-year-old Vasant Patil, when approximately 200 relatives and villagers had gathered at the crematorium. According to tradition, they were waiting for crows to touch the nived (an offering to the departed soul) when the unexpected assault began.
"A large coconut leaf fell directly onto a beehive located on a coconut tree within the crematorium premises," explained Omkar Patole, the sarpanch of Yelawade. "This disturbance immediately provoked the bees, who began swarming and stinging the people standing below. The attack persisted for about 30 minutes as people scrambled for safety, with some even taking refuge in a nearby poultry shed."
Medical Response and Treatment Details
Following the incident, local administration and health department personnel swiftly initiated relief operations. Medical teams arrived at the scene to provide immediate first aid before transporting the injured for further treatment.
Dr. Anirudha Pimpale, the Kolhapur district health officer, provided specific details about the medical response: "Initially, 55 individuals arrived at the primary health centre in Rashiwade village with multiple bee stings, predominantly on their faces. Among these, 43 received anti-allergic treatment at the PHC itself. However, twelve people in more serious condition were transferred via 108 and 102 ambulances to CPR Hospital in Kolhapur, where they continue to receive medical care."
Recent Pattern of Bee Incidents in the Region
This is not an isolated event in Kolhapur district. Just last month, two separate bee attack incidents were reported in the area:
- Twelve people were stung in Kagal
- Eight individuals were attacked in Ajara
These recurring incidents highlight a growing concern about bee-human conflicts in the region, particularly during outdoor gatherings and ceremonies.
The sudden nature of the attack during a solemn funeral rite has left the community shaken, raising questions about safety measures at public spaces where such natural hazards might exist. Authorities are likely to review the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
