According to officials, the group—residents of Bodga village located across the Indravati river—was returning home from a weekly market when their boat lost balance midstream and overturned, throwing all six occupants into the fast-flowing river.
The rescue operation faced significant challenges from the outset. As explained by Tehsildar Suryakant, revenue and health department teams reached the spot soon after the incident, but because it was evening, the rescue operation could not commence immediately. The search resumed on Thursday morning with a motorboat, nearly 18 hours after the capsizing occurred.

During the search operation, rescue teams made a particularly poignant discovery. The bodies of the woman and her infant were recovered nearly 18 hours after the incident, with the baby found tied to the mother with a towel—a heartbreaking indication of the woman's desperate attempt to protect her child as the boat went down.
Bhairamgarh BMO Ramesh Tigga provided crucial details about the victims, stating that four people—a husband, wife, and their two children—had gone missing in the mishap. "One woman and one man who survived returned to Bodga village. They were rescued by villagers," he said, adding that the health department was kept on alert as the rescue operation continued.
