Aizawl: Covid-19 infections have been rising in Mizoram, particularly in the Aizawl district, with 90 cases detected so far this year and two active cases undergoing treatment as of Tuesday, according to officials from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) under the state Health and Family Welfare department.

The officials, citing IDSP records, noted a surge in May, when 52 cases were detected from 106 samples tested during the month. The highest single-day count was 18 infections on May 6, when 22 samples were tested. Since early 2020, Mizoram has tested 19,98,592 samples, with 2,39,771 people found infected, while 734 deaths have been recorded.

Officials emphasized that no death due to Covid-19 has been recorded in the state since 2024, and those infected with the coronavirus this year are experiencing only mild symptoms. Despite the absence of Covid-19-related deaths for over two years, the disease remains present and is expected to persist. State health department officials appealed to the public, especially the elderly and individuals with co-morbidities, to take preventive measures.
