Cuttack Hospital Fire Leaves Families in Grief as Recovering Patients Perish

In a heart-wrenching incident at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, families are grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones due to a devastating fire. The tragedy has left many, like Nirmala Barik, inconsolable as they mourn patients who were on the path to recovery.

Nirmala Barik's Story: A Life Partner Lost

Nirmala Barik, 38, from Paikarapur in Cuttack district, was shattered upon discovering her husband, Gauranga Charan Barik, 44, in the hospital mortuary on Monday. A thinly-built woman adorned in a red saree and bangles, she expressed her profound grief, stating that her husband was her sole hope for a better life. "My husband was my only hope to lead a better life. Though many people teased me for not having any kid, my husband always defended me. Now I am alone in this cruel world," she lamented, highlighting her childless status and the emotional support she lost.

Gauranga, a house painter, had been involved in a road accident near his village on February 19. Initially in serious condition, his health had shown significant improvement after treatment. "During the last few days, he was recovering very well. I was hopeful that he would be cured and come home but now it is a dream," Nirmala recounted. She was resting near the ICU when the fire broke out, and her desperate pleas for help went unanswered as smoke engulfed the area around 3 am, leading to the tragic news of his death.

Other Families Share Similar Tales of Loss

Like Nirmala, relatives of other deceased patients have poignant stories to tell, underscoring the abrupt nature of the tragedy. Some victims were mere days away from being discharged from the ICU.

  • Menaka Rout, 56, from Sarumahi village in Kendrapada district, had finalized the date for her son's ring ceremony on Ram Navami. After falling unconscious in the bathroom on March 1, she was rushed to SCB and was undergoing treatment at the Trauma Care Centre before perishing in the fire.
  • Ramesh Chandra Parida, 45, from Chasapada in Cuttack district, suffered an accident near Charbatia on March 9 and was admitted to the Trauma Care ICU. He was recovering well, with doctors planning to shift him to a general ward in two days, but the fire claimed his life. A fitter in a Jharsuguda company, he leaves behind a son in Class IX. "We brought him to hospital for his recovery, but the hospital fire took his life. This is unfortunate," his brother-in-law, Rabindra Kumar Rout, expressed.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This tragedy raises serious questions about hospital safety protocols and emergency preparedness in healthcare facilities. The loss of multiple patients who were on the verge of recovery has sparked outrage and calls for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future. Families are left to cope with the cruel twist of fate, where hope turned into despair overnight.
