Major Fire Erupts at Thuravoor Government Hospital in Alappuzha

A significant fire incident occurred at the Thuravoor taluk government hospital in Alappuzha on Monday, resulting in the destruction of medicines valued at an estimated Rs 1 crore. The blaze, which ignited in the morning, prompted a swift emergency response and the evacuation of numerous patients to nearby medical facilities.

Cause and Initial Discovery of the Fire

Preliminary investigations point to a short circuit in the hospital's air-conditioning system as the likely cause of the fire. Hospital authorities and police officials have confirmed that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The fire originated around 10:30 am in the third-floor storage area of the hospital's old building, situated near Thuravoor Junction along the national highway. A pharmacist was the first to detect the flames and immediately raised an alarm, alerting other staff members who rushed to the scene.

Challenges During Rescue Operations

Thick, dense smoke emanating from the burning medicines severely hampered rescue efforts. Although local autorickshaw drivers and residents arrived promptly to offer assistance, hospital authorities restricted access to the affected area. They warned that the fire could potentially trigger explosions, posing a significant safety risk.

The first fire brigade unit arrived from Aroor within 15 minutes of the alarm. At the time of the fire, the hospital was accommodating:

  • 11 dialysis patients
  • 4 women in labour
  • 10 other inpatients
  • Approximately 200 outpatients

All patients were safely transferred to Cherthala government hospital and Alappuzha general hospital to ensure their continued care and safety.

Large-Scale Firefighting Efforts

Fire brigade units from multiple locations, including Cherthala, Aroor, Alappuzha, Mattancherry, Ernakulam Gandhinagar, and Fort Kochi, collaborated in a coordinated effort to combat the blaze. The firefighters worked tirelessly for about two hours, continuously pumping water to fully extinguish the flames.

Police personnel also arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue operations, providing additional support and ensuring order during the emergency. The combined efforts of all emergency services were crucial in managing the situation and preventing further damage or injuries.
