Fireworks Factory Explosion in Tamil Nadu Claims 25 Lives, Sparks Outrage
The death toll from a devastating blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti village, Tamil Nadu, has tragically risen to 25. Two women, who sustained severe injuries in the Sunday incident, succumbed to their wounds at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital on Monday morning, adding to the growing list of fatalities.
Victims Identified Amidst Grief and Anger
Officials have managed to identify the bodies of 21 individuals, with the identities of four workers still pending confirmation. The identified victims include Pandiammal, 55, Nachiammal, 56, Janaki, 56, Indrani, 46, Kalliammal, 45, Pandiammal, 54, Poongudi, 65, Pakiyalakshmi, 39, Alagammal, 44, Maruthan, 50, Ponalagu, 34, Anna Lakshmi, 54, Chinnapapa, 35, Marriyammal, 54, Pitchayammal, 45, Petchiammal, 51, and Meiyakkal, 55, all residents of Servaikaranpatti. Additionally, Veluchamy, 56, from Thiruthangal, Pachavarnam, 54, from Athipatti, and Veeralakshmi, 42, also from Athipatti, were among those lost. While 15 families have received the bodies of their loved ones, the remaining 10 families are expected to do so on Tuesday. Six other workers who were injured in the blast are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Illegal Operations and Legal Actions
Preliminary investigations reveal that the unit, named Vanaja fireworks, was operating with multiple violations. The license holders, Eshwari and her husband Muthumanickam, allegedly sub-leased the facility to Muthukrishnan of Sivakasi. Based on a complaint filed by VAO Vanitha of V Muthuramalingapuram village, the Vachakarapatti police have registered a case against Muthumanickam and Eshwari under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosives Act. Special police teams have been formed to apprehend the absconding couple.
Community Protests and Demands for Justice
Grief has overwhelmed Servaikaranpatti village, as 19 of the 25 deceased hailed from this community. On Monday, hundreds of people, including family members and relatives of the victims, gathered at the hospital and staged a road blockade, demanding adequate compensation and the immediate arrest of the accused. After negotiations with officials, the protest was temporarily withdrawn. However, villagers from Servaikaranpatti refused to accept the bodies until compensation was assured, leading them to return to their village in the afternoon. Later in the evening, they organized another road roko on the Virudhunagar-Sivakasi Road near Uppodai village, reiterating their demands. Police intervened to pacify the demonstrators.
Government Response and Compensation Announcements
Addressing reporters on Monday evening, Virudhunagar District Collector N O Sukhaputra announced that the state government would provide a compensation of 5 lakh rupees and an additional 50,000 rupees each to the families of the 25 victims. Furthermore, since the Union government has declared a compensation of 2 lakh rupees per family, steps are being expedited to issue death certificates and legal heir certificates to facilitate the application process. To prevent such tragic accidents in the future, the collector stated that special teams would be constituted to conduct periodic inspections of fireworks units across the region.
In a show of solidarity, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran and Trichy MP Durai Vaiko visited the hospital to express their condolences to the bereaved families.
