Pune to Host Free Bone Marrow Cross-Matching Camp for Thalassaemia Patients
In a significant move to combat thalassaemia and enhance treatment accessibility, a free bone marrow cross-matching camp will be conducted at the District Hospital in Aundh, Pune, on March 13. This initiative, part of the state-wide campaign "One Step Towards Thalassaemia Liberation," is designed to raise awareness and provide critical medical support for children affected by this hereditary blood disorder from Pune and surrounding regions.
Understanding Thalassaemia and the Need for Bone Marrow Transplants
Thalassaemia is a severe genetic condition that necessitates lifelong monthly blood transfusions and regular medical monitoring for patients. Currently, the only permanent cure available is a bone marrow transplant (BMT). However, a successful transplant requires a mandatory bone marrow matching test, known as HLA typing, for both the patient and their immediate family members to ensure compatibility.
Free Testing to Alleviate Financial Burden
According to an official statement from the state health department, the camp will offer these essential HLA typing tests completely free of charge. In private laboratories, these tests typically cost between Rs2,000 and Rs15,000, depending on their complexity, with high-resolution HLA typing—often crucial for accurate matching—ranging from Rs7,000 to Rs15,000 per sample. By providing these preliminary tests at no cost, the health department aims to make the initial step toward a cure accessible to all families, regardless of their financial situation.
The overall expense of a bone marrow transplant in India remains substantial, varying from Rs10 lakh to Rs40 lakh, based on whether it is an autologous procedure (using the patient's own cells) or an allogeneic one (using an external donor). This free camp seeks to reduce the financial barriers that many families face in pursuing this life-saving treatment.
Success of the Initiative and Future Goals
Kailash Bawiskar, deputy director of the health department, highlighted the success of the ongoing efforts. "A successful transplant can allow a child to live a life completely free of thalassemia," he stated. "So far, over 90 children from Maharashtra and other states have undergone successful transplants through the Thalassemia Support Group and are now leading healthy lives. We have already conducted 12 HLA typing camps, providing free cross-matching for approximately 1,500 families."
The "One Step Towards Thalassaemia Liberation" campaign was officially launched on May 8, 2025, in Mumbai, under the leadership of Meghna Sakore-Bordikar, minister of state for health. This comprehensive initiative focuses on two key aspects:
- Preventing the birth of thalassaemia-affected children through counseling and screening programs for newly married couples and pregnant women.
- Improving the quality of life for individuals living with thalassaemia major by facilitating access to advanced treatments like bone marrow transplants.
This camp in Pune represents a crucial step forward in the fight against thalassaemia, offering hope and practical support to affected families while promoting broader public health awareness.
