Ganjam District Launches Free Auto-Ambulance Service for Pregnant Women
In a significant move to enhance maternal healthcare, the Ganjam district administration in Berhampur is set to launch a free auto-ambulance service next week. This initiative, named Nirikhyana Sathi, aims to ferry pregnant women from remote areas to nearby health centers, as announced by district collector V Keerthi Vasan.
Targeting Remote Villages for Better Access
The administration has identified 247 villages across 12 blocks to provide this essential service. Under the Nirikhyana Sathi program, designated autorickshaws will transport pregnant women to hospitals for free ultrasound tests three times and finally for delivery. The fare for these auto-ambulances will be covered by the district administration using Red Cross funds, ensuring no financial burden on the beneficiaries.
How the Service Works
To facilitate easy access, the WhatsApp numbers of auto-ambulance drivers will be shared with expectant mothers and Ashas (Accredited Social Health Activists). This allows them to call for assistance whenever needed. Approximately 100 auto-rickshaws will be engaged in this service, each adorned with Nirikhyana Sathi stickers for easy identification.
Building on Previous Success
This new service builds upon the earlier Nirikhyana initiative launched in 2023, which provided free ultrasound facilities. Under Nirikhyana, an app was developed to send alerts to pregnant women for important tests, including ultrasounds. The program's effectiveness was recognized last year when it received the SKOCH award, highlighting its impact on improving maternal health outcomes.
The launch of Nirikhyana Sathi represents a proactive step by the Ganjam district administration to address healthcare disparities in remote areas. By leveraging technology and community resources, this service aims to reduce maternal mortality rates and ensure safer pregnancies for women in underserved regions.
