Heatwave Grips Delhi-NCR: Hospitals in Noida, Ghaziabad Report Surge in Heat-Related Illnesses
Heatwave Surge: Noida Hospitals See 20% Rise in Heat Illness Cases

Heatwave Intensifies Across Delhi-NCR, Overwhelming Hospitals in Noida and Ghaziabad

As temperatures continue to climb steadily across the Delhi-National Capital Region, outpatient departments in Noida and Ghaziabad are experiencing a significant surge in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. Medical professionals report that over the past week, most individuals have presented with symptoms including severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, and dizziness.

Doctors Attribute Rise to Weather Shifts and Prolonged Heat Exposure

According to healthcare experts, a combination of sudden weather changes and extended exposure to high temperatures is severely impacting residents, particularly those with pre-existing medical conditions. While the majority of cases are being managed through OPD consultations, more severe instances are necessitating hospital admissions for intensive care.

A senior doctor from Noida District Hospital revealed to The Times of India that patient numbers have already escalated dramatically. He stated, "We have observed approximately a 20% increase in patients, and we are concerned that with further temperature rises, these numbers will continue to grow. Many patients are complaining of nausea, often linked to food spoilage, which occurs rapidly during the summer months."

Medical Authorities Issue Crucial Safety Guidelines

Chief Medical Superintendent Ajay Rana of the hospital strongly advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours. He emphasized, "It is essential for everyone to drink ample water and consume fresh, home-cooked meals. Avoiding oily street food and stale items is critical to prevent stomach infections. Outdoor workers should take regular breaks in shaded areas and cover their heads while traveling."

Private hospitals in the region are also noting a marked uptick in cases. Dr. Ajay Agarwal, Chairman of Internal Medicine at Fortis Noida, explained, "We are currently handling a heavy influx of patients with minor heat distress such as dizziness, vasovagal syncope, and dehydration. If left untreated, these conditions can quickly escalate into medical emergencies."

Severe Cases Pose Risks to Cardiovascular and Kidney Health

Dr. Agarwal further highlighted that severe episodes of heatstroke and heat syncope can exacerbate existing cardiovascular and kidney issues, leading to hospital admissions. He added, "Our wards are managing several cases of electrolyte imbalance and acute kidney injury directly caused by this ongoing heatwave."

Preventive Measures Urged as Temperatures Expected to Rise

With forecasts predicting further temperature increases in the coming weeks, doctors are urging the public to remain vigilant. Key recommendations include:

  • Stay indoors between 11 am and 4 pm to avoid peak heat exposure.
  • Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing to facilitate cooling.
  • Use umbrellas or caps for protection when outdoors.
  • Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if not feeling thirsty, to maintain hydration.

This proactive approach is deemed essential to mitigate the health risks associated with the intense summer conditions sweeping through the Delhi-NCR area.
