Bulldozers Banned in Victory Rallies in Bengal

Kolkata: Bulldozers will not be allowed in victory processions and political rallies, Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) SN Gupta and Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand announced on Wednesday. This directive follows a directive from Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to arrest those involved in post-poll violence, which has resulted in two deaths and reports of widespread vandalism.

Strict Action Against Police Inaction

Commissioner Nand stated that any police officer found to have "not acted enough" to stop illegal demolitions despite being present at the scene will face disciplinary action. This statement refers to the demolition of structures in the New Market area of the city using a bulldozer on Tuesday night. "From now on, prior permission is required for holding victory processions," Nand added. He also urged citizens not to believe in fake news circulating on social media.

Massive Crackdown on Violence

DGP Gupta revealed that 200 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in connection with post-election violence, leading to the arrest of 433 individuals. The measures are part of a broader effort to maintain law and order following the recent elections. The authorities have emphasized that no unauthorized use of heavy machinery, such as bulldozers, will be tolerated during political events.
