In a concerning public health incident, more than thirty individuals fell ill due to suspected food contamination following a birthday party in Indore's Bhagirathpura locality. The event took place on Saturday when resident Akash Mukshia hosted a gathering at his Shukla Gali home to celebrate his son's birthday. Approximately forty relatives and acquaintances attended the festivities, which featured traditional local cuisine.
The menu centered around dal-bafle, a regional delicacy popular in Madhya Pradesh. This dish typically consists of lentil curry served with steamed wheat dumplings, representing an important part of local culinary traditions.
Symptoms and Medical Response
By Sunday morning, a significant majority of the party guests began reporting distressing symptoms including vomiting and severe stomach pain. These symptoms manifested shortly after attendees returned to their respective homes following the celebration.
Mukshia confirmed that more than thirty guests experienced illness, including his immediate family members. "We prepared all the food at home using water from our private borewell," he explained. "Medical professionals have clearly identified this as a case of food poisoning based on the symptoms and timing."
Fortunately, authorities confirmed that none of the cases were critical. While many affected individuals sought treatment at local private clinics, no hospital admissions were necessary for recovery.
Official Investigation and Findings
Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Hasani provided details about the medical response. "Three individuals visited the local government dispensary complaining of abdominal discomfort," he reported. "One of these patients was referred to Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital for further evaluation."
Additionally, three other affected persons directly approached MYH with complaints of vomiting and stomach pain. Dr. Hasani emphasized that all patients showed normal vital signs and stable conditions throughout their medical evaluations.
A specialized team from the food department promptly visited the location on Sunday to conduct a thorough investigation. Their primary objective was to collect samples of the ingredients used in preparing the birthday feast.
Food Safety Officer Manish Swami revealed a significant challenge in the investigation. "Unfortunately, no leftover dal-bafle remained available for sampling," he stated. "Our current suspicion centers on the dal component, which might have been stale or contaminated through some means, ultimately causing the food poisoning outbreak."
