A 30-year-old post-graduate medical student allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of the boys’ hostel at MGM Medical College late Sunday night. The deceased was a final-year PG student from the 2023 batch in the Department of Medicine and was scheduled to complete his course within a few months. He was a native of Jabalpur.
Incident Details
According to Sayogitaganj police station in-charge KP Yadav, the deceased, who resided in room number 6 on the ground floor, accessed the roof of Block 5 during the night. Police said that he locked both access doors to the roof from the inside before taking the extreme step. He sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot. His mobile phone was recovered nearby in a damaged condition and has been sent for forensic analysis. The emergency workers had to use a grinder machine to cut open the roof doors on Monday morning to secure the area.
Potential Relationship Angle
A potential relationship angle is being evaluated by the investigators. Sources indicate that a female medical student had called the deceased’s friends late Sunday night, expressing concern that he was not taking her calls. Following her call, hostel residents searched the premises and found his body.
Security Lapses
The police discovered that the functional CCTV cameras installed across the hostel premises were turned off at the time of the incident, preventing precise chronological tracking of the event. Furthermore, institutional guidelines requiring terrace doors to be kept locked were violated, leaving the roof fully accessible to students without security oversight. Discrepancies regarding campus regulations were also observed.
Liquor Bottles Found
Despite management’s official claims of maintaining a drug-free campus, large quantities of empty liquor bottles were found scattered across the hostel grounds, including two large sacks filled with glass bottles inside the residential block where the deceased lived.
Officials’ Response
The MGM Medical College administration organized a condolence meeting on Monday afternoon, issuing a statement describing the deceased as a dedicated and promising clinician-student. However, college officials have remained silent regarding the documented security and policy lapses. The dean, Dr Arvind Ghanghoriya, is currently on leave, while In-charge dean Dr Ameet Julka and hostel In-charge Dr Sunil Ahirwar did not respond to requests for comment.
