Kozhikode Crematoriums Grapple with LPG Cylinder Shortage as Supply Priorities Shift
The functioning of gas-based crematoriums in Kozhikode has been severely impacted by a shortage of LPG cylinders, with the corporation-run Smrithipadam facility facing significant difficulties in obtaining essential supplies. This crisis has emerged as gas agencies have been instructed to prioritize domestic consumers, leaving critical services like cremations in a precarious position.
Deputy Mayor Highlights Emergency Need for Cremation Gas
Deputy Mayor S Jayasree confirmed that the gas agency supplying cylinders to the crematorium informed the civic body about the new prioritization directive. "We are facing difficulty in obtaining LPG cylinders," she stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. "We will approach the company to treat gas required for cremation as an emergency need and allot the necessary cylinders." This move aims to ensure that funeral services are not disrupted due to supply constraints.
Operational Challenges at Smrithipadam Crematorium
Employees at the Smrithipadam crematorium reported that only one cylinder was available on Wednesday morning, which was used for a single cremation. By afternoon, they managed to procure three additional cylinders, but bookings for cremations had already been scheduled for the next day. Anandan, a staff member, expressed concern: "It will become an issue if we do not get enough cylinders." This shortage threatens to delay funeral services and cause distress to families relying on these facilities.
Broader Impact on Kozhikode's Crematorium Infrastructure
Jayasree noted that the corporation currently operates gas crematoriums at West Hill and Smrithipadam, while facilities at Nallalam and Puthiyapalam are non-functional due to maintenance issues. Additionally, the electric crematorium at Smrithipadam is under repair and is expected to resume operations in two days. This combination of factors exacerbates the strain on available resources, highlighting the need for immediate action to secure LPG supplies for crematoriums.
The LPG cylinder shortage in Kozhikode underscores broader supply chain challenges affecting essential services. As authorities work to address this issue, the focus remains on ensuring that crematoriums can operate without interruption, maintaining dignity and efficiency in funeral processes during this critical period.
