Heatwave Intensifies Across Marathwada Region
On Sunday, a severe heatwave swept through the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, with multiple cities experiencing maximum temperatures soaring above the 40°C mark. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded a high of 40.4°C, which is more than two degrees above the normal seasonal average for this time of year.
Record High Temperatures in Key Cities
Parbhani emerged as the hottest spot in Marathwada, with the mercury level reaching a scorching 41.7°C. Other cities in the region also faced intense heat, with Dharashiv reporting a maximum temperature of 40°C. Across Maharashtra, Akola registered the highest temperature at 43.1°C, while Nashik and Kolhapur recorded 39.5°C and 39°C, respectively.
Health Experts Issue Critical Advisories
In response to the rising temperatures, health professionals have urged residents to exercise extreme caution to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat stress and sunstroke. Dr. Sanjay Patne, a general physician, emphasized several preventive measures:
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Stay indoors during peak afternoon hours when the sun is at its strongest.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink sufficient water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty, to prevent dehydration.
- Protective Clothing: Use light-colored cotton garments to cover the head and ears, and carry umbrellas when going outside.
- Limit Physical Activity: Reduce strenuous work or exercise during the hottest parts of the day to minimize risk.
Emergency Response for Heat-Related Issues
Dr. Patne also provided guidance on handling potential heat emergencies. "In cases of suspected sunstroke, immediate medical attention is crucial," he stated. First aid steps include moving the affected person to a cool, shaded area, applying cold sponges to the body, and offering oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or homemade drinks. These measures should be followed while transporting the individual to the nearest healthcare facility for professional treatment.
The ongoing heatwave highlights the need for public awareness and preparedness as summer conditions intensify across the region. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and adhere to health guidelines to safeguard against the adverse effects of high temperatures.
