Mysuru Zoo Prepares Action Plan to Combat Avian Influenza Threat
Mysuru Zoo Action Plan Against Avian Influenza

Mysuru zoo has developed a comprehensive action plan aimed at the prevention, control, and containment of avian influenza across its facilities, including the Mysuru zoo, Karanji Lake Nature Park, and the Chamundi Wild Animals Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Koorgahalli.

Disinfection Protocols at Entry Points

Executive Director P Anusha announced on Wednesday that strict disinfection procedures are being enforced at all entry points to these locations. Vehicles entering the premises, including those carrying visitors, staff, officers, and food supplies, are required to pass through disinfectant dips. Additionally, foot dips have been placed at staff and visitor entry gates, with clear instructions provided on their proper usage. Each animal enclosure is equipped with foot dips for animal keepers, and hand sanitizers are used before and after handling animals, animal waste, and feed materials.

Training and Monitoring

Animal keepers have been trained to recognize abnormal clinical signs in animals, and veterinarians conduct daily rounds to monitor the enclosures closely. Employees at Karanji Lake have been instructed to immediately report any deaths among migratory birds to senior officers or veterinarians.

Surveillance and Testing

Serological surveillance of both captive and migratory birds is carried out as advised by scientists. Fecal samples are collected from captive birds within the zoo and at Karanji Lake, as well as from migratory birds, for laboratory testing.

Feeding Practices and Restrictions

Regarding feeding practices, live fowls brought to the zoo undergo physical examination by zoo veterinarians to check for signs of disease. Following examination, the birds are slaughtered and eviscerated. Staff members are prohibited from visiting poultry farms, bird sanctuaries, or other zoos until the threat of avian influenza is resolved.

Rapid Response Team

A rapid response team has been designated, comprising a veterinarian, a lab technician, and four keepers, to act immediately during any outbreak. This team will ensure safe disposal and containment measures are implemented effectively.
