Nagpur Grapples with Severe Water Contamination Crisis Across Multiple Zones
In a startling revelation at a high-level review meeting, officials from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) have admitted that nearly 50 localities spread across 9 civic zones are receiving contaminated drinking water. This disclosure has triggered widespread alarm over an impending public health emergency in the city.
Mayor Convenes Emergency Meeting Amidst Growing Complaints
The alarming situation came to light during a meeting convened by Mayor Neeta Thakre, where repeated complaints from residents about foul-smelling and discoloured water were thoroughly discussed. The contamination has been traced to multiple elevated service reservoir (ESR) command areas, exposing significant lapses in monitoring, maintenance, and quality control protocols.
Mayor Thakre expressed serious concern over issues such as pipeline leakages, possible sewer cross-connections, and inadequate chlorination. She has directed the administration to take immediate corrective measures, including identifying contamination points, conducting flushing operations, strengthening water testing, and ensuring a non-polluted and sufficient water supply to all affected residents.
Zone-Wise Breakdown of Affected Areas
The contamination crisis spans nearly all civic zones, with only Hanuman Nagar zone currently reporting no issues. Here is a detailed overview of the impacted areas:
- Laxmi Nagar Zone: Residents of East Samartha Nagar in Ajni have reported polluted water supply.
- Dharampeth Zone: Complaints have emerged from Dabha Basti, Pandhrabodi, and Panchsheel Nagar.
- Dhantoli Zone: Vasant Nagar under Wanjari Nagar Old ESR is affected.
- Nehru Nagar Zone: Several pockets, including Nandanvan Layout near Shamshan Mandir, Kawelu Quarter, Gurudeo Nagar, Sindhi Basti in Tajbag, and areas behind Tajbagh dargah, are grappling with contamination.
- Gandhibagh Zone: Gulab Baba Math (Siraspeth), Jalalpura, Mirza Galli Khadan, Ganeshpeth, Rajabaxa, and Lodhipura are among the worst-hit areas.
- Satranjipura Zone: Widespread contamination has been reported in over a dozen areas, including localities around Itwari railway station, Prem Nagar, Thakkar Gram, Dhiwarpura, Gosavi Ghat, Devgharpura, Bhankheda, Pili Marbat Chowk, and Vinoba Bhave Nagar.
- Lakadganj Zone: Complaints have surfaced from Girija Nagar, Gajanan Mandir area, Bhandewadi slum, Pardi, Subhan Nagar ESR command area, Rampeth, Vairagade Wadi, and HB Town.
- Ashi Nagar Zone: Pawan Nagar, Yogi Arvind Nagar, Anand Budh Vihar, Hudco Colony, Nara Gaon, and Babadeep Singh Nagar are affected.
- Mangalwari Zone: Contamination has been reported in Hasanoor ITI, Borgaon, and Nikhare Layout in Manjapur.
Urgency Amplified by Recent Health Incidents
The issue gained urgent attention after a recent report highlighted contamination in Mankapur, where approximately 50 residents fell ill due to polluted water. In response, Orange City Water Limited (OCWL) traced the source to a collapsed and overflowing sewage chamber, which allowed sewage to infiltrate the drinking water supply line.
OCWL has since replaced the entire 250-metre stretch of the existing 150 mm diameter water pipeline and completed necessary interconnections to restore and stabilize the supply network. The utility is also shifting 35 house service connections, with completion expected soon, ensuring safe drinking water for affected households.
Statistical Overview of the Crisis
The scale of the contamination is vast, impacting over 4 lakh households across the city. Here is a zone-wise impact summary:
- Laxmi Nagar: 1 area affected, impacting 41,783 consumers across 8 ESRs.
- Dharampeth: 3 areas affected, impacting 46,029 consumers across 7 ESRs.
- Hanuman Nagar: No contamination reported, with 43,254 consumers and 6 ESRs.
- Dhantoli: 1 area affected, impacting 30,505 consumers across 4 ESRs.
- Nehru Nagar: 5 major pockets affected, impacting 48,677 consumers across 7 ESRs.
- Gandhibagh: 6 areas affected, impacting 29,169 consumers across 3 command areas.
- Satranjipura: Over 15 areas affected, impacting 56,026 consumers across 9 ESRs.
- Lakadganj: Over 10 areas affected, impacting 60,142 consumers across 8 ESRs.
- Ashi Nagar: 7 areas affected, impacting 61,822 consumers across 11 ESRs.
- Mangalwari: 3 areas affected, impacting 34,628 consumers across 4 ESRs.
Critical Concerns and Future Implications
With complaints emerging from multiple zones simultaneously, serious questions have been raised about the effectiveness of Nagpur's water quality monitoring system and the reliability of its promise for safe, round-the-clock supply. Key concerns flagged during the review meeting include possible sewer cross-connections, leakages, and inadequate chlorination checks.
Unless swift and comprehensive corrective measures are implemented, this crisis threatens to escalate into a full-blown public health emergency, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure and vigilant oversight to prevent future occurrences.
