Prayagraj Endures Scorching 44°C, Heatwave Cripples Daily Life
The Sangam city of Prayagraj experienced its most intense heat of the season on Friday, with the maximum temperature skyrocketing to a blistering 44°C. The minimum temperature settled at 22.2°C, exacerbating heatwave-like conditions that have severely disrupted normal activities across the region.
Steady Temperature Rise Over the Week
This sharp spike follows a pattern of escalating heat earlier in the week. On Thursday, the city recorded a maximum of 43.0°C and a minimum of 22.8°C, while Wednesday saw temperatures reach 43°C with a low of 21.8°C. The continuous upward trend over recent days has left residents grappling with the oppressive weather, forcing many to alter their daily routines.
Streets, markets, and public spaces are witnessing a significant decline in footfall during daylight hours as people opt to stay indoors to avoid the extreme heat. Weather conditions have remained persistently dry, with low humidity levels compounding the discomfort. On Friday, relative humidity was recorded at a maximum of 34% and a minimum of 15%, creating an arid environment that intensifies the feeling of heat.
Public Health Concerns and Hospital Strain
Experts highlight that while temperature increases are typical for this time of year, surpassing the 44°C mark so early in the season is alarming. The sustained high temperatures are not only disrupting daily life but are also beginning to take a toll on public health. Hospitals throughout Prayagraj, including both government and private facilities, are reporting a notable rise in heat-related illnesses, particularly affecting children.
Pediatric departments are experiencing a heavy influx of patients, with doctors attending to hundreds of cases daily. Common ailments include dehydration, fever, and heat exhaustion. In some instances, hospital wards are operating at full capacity due to the surge in admissions, straining healthcare resources.
Economic Impacts and Weather Forecast
Despite the challenging conditions, certain seasonal businesses are thriving. Shops selling cold drinks, ice creams, juices, and traditional beverages like lassi are enjoying brisk sales as residents seek ways to cool down and stay hydrated amid the heat.
According to weather experts, the prevailing heat conditions are expected to persist for the next several days. There is no anticipated relief in the coming week, with temperatures likely to remain elevated, continuing to impact the city's residents and infrastructure.
