Punjab Government Announces Major Expansion of Healthcare Coverage for Cancer Patients
In a significant development for healthcare in Punjab, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh has declared that cancer treatment expenses up to Rs 10 lakh will now be covered under the state's Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. This announcement was made during World Cancer Day observances at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in New Chandigarh, bringing substantial relief to thousands of patients across the state.
Enhanced Medical Infrastructure and Patient Support
Dr Singh highlighted the critical role of Punjab's state-of-the-art cancer institutes in Sangrur and New Chandigarh, which together provide 450 beds of advanced cancer care capacity. 150 beds are available at Sangrur, while 300 beds operate at New Chandigarh, eliminating the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.
The minister emphasized that these facilities have transformed cancer care in Punjab, attracting patients not only from within the state but also from neighboring regions. He recalled the era when cancer patients from Malwa depended on the "cancer train" to Rajasthan, contrasting it with Punjab's current status as a healthcare hub.
Comprehensive Care Model and Preventive Measures
Dr Singh outlined the operational framework for these institutes, which will function on a hub-and-spoke model. This system connects district hospitals through telemedicine and supports Day Care Cancer Centres across all 23 districts of Punjab, ensuring widespread access to specialized care.
Addressing prevention, the minister advised citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles, including:
- Maintaining a nutritious diet
- Avoiding packed foods, refined oils, and fried items
- Abstaining from tobacco, smoking, and alcohol
He also noted that approximately 1.75 lakh people participate daily in yoga sessions under the 'CM di Yogshala' initiative, promoting wellness across the state.
Inspirational Engagement and Future Directions
During the World Cancer Day event, Dr Singh interacted with "Little Warriors" battling blood cancer, cutting a cake with young patients and applauding their confidence during an inspiring ramp walk. He stressed that positive thinking and a strong will to live are powerful tools in combating even the deadliest diseases.
Dr Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, expressed gratitude to the Punjab government and the Department of Atomic Energy for their support, confirming that comprehensive cancer care is being provided at nominal rates. The occasion also featured honors for staff members and competition winners, along with a free cancer diagnosis camp.
This expansion of the CM Sehat Yojana represents a major step forward in Punjab's healthcare landscape, offering financial protection and advanced medical support to cancer patients while emphasizing prevention and holistic wellness.
