A 24-year-old daily wager undergoing treatment for suspected rabies died after falling from the first floor of AIIMS Bhopal on Friday morning. The incident comes weeks after a 50-year-old woman in Chhindwara exhibited similar symptoms, barking and attacking people following a dog bite.
Incident Details
According to police, the patient allegedly jumped to his death from a first-floor window at the hospital. Sub-inspector Hemraj Kumre, the investigating officer, stated that a case has been registered at Bagh Sewania police station.
Patient Background
The victim was a native of Ikodiya village under Nateran police station in Vidisha district. He was bitten by a pet dog nearly two months ago while visiting his village for Holi celebrations. His elder brother informed police that the man's health progressively deteriorated after the bite.
On April 27, his condition worsened significantly, leading to his admission at a private hospital. He was later transferred to AIIMS Bhopal on Thursday.
Abnormal Behavior
Family members reported that the patient displayed unusual behavior on Thursday night, including barking like a dog. Around 8 am on Friday, he allegedly shattered a glass window on the first floor and jumped, dying on impact.
Investigation
Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to his death. The focus is on understanding the events that preceded the tragic incident. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities and are awaiting post-mortem reports to confirm the presence of rabies.
This case highlights the severe consequences of rabies, a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can lead to fatal encephalitis. Early vaccination after a dog bite is crucial to prevent the onset of symptoms.
