SGPGIMS Experts Stress Diet and Lifestyle Changes to Combat Fatty Liver and Obesity
In Lucknow, medical professionals at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) underscored the critical importance of dietary and lifestyle adjustments in addressing fatty liver disease and obesity. This message was delivered during an awareness program held on Saturday in observance of World Liver Day.
Event Highlights Growing Public Health Concern
Organized by the institute's department of hepatology, the event titled "Fatty Liver & Obesity: Real Stories, Real Solutions" convened patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The program aligned with this year's theme, "Solid Habits, Strong Liver," and focused on the escalating public health burden associated with lifestyle-related liver conditions.
Rising Prevalence and Root Causes
Amit Goel, head of the department, highlighted the increasing prevalence of fatty liver disease and its strong correlation with unhealthy dietary patterns and sedentary lifestyles. He emphasized that these factors are primary contributors to the condition, which poses significant health risks if left unmanaged.
Practical Solutions and Nutritional Guidance
Dietary experts at the event outlined practical meal plans and stressed the role of balanced nutrition in enhancing liver health. They provided actionable advice on incorporating healthier food choices into daily routines to support liver function and overall well-being.
Patient Experiences and Interactive Engagement
Real-life patient experiences formed a cornerstone of the session, offering insights into the challenges and successes of managing fatty liver disease. Doctors reinforced that regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and routine medical check-ups can effectively reverse or control the condition. An interactive segment allowed participants to seek personalized advice and share their concerns, fostering a supportive community environment.
Educational Outreach and Youth Involvement
As part of the outreach efforts, a poster-making competition on liver health was organized at Kendriya Vidyalaya SGPGIMS. This initiative aimed to engage younger audiences and raise awareness about liver health from an early age.
Parallel Focus on Nutrition in Critical Care
In a related development, the Critical Care Medicine department at SGPGI hosted a continuing medical education program. This event discussed the crucial role of nutrition in critically ill patients, highlighting malnutrition among hospitalized individuals as a key factor contributing to morbidity and mortality. Topics covered included immune nutrition and disease-centric diets, such as those tailored for liver failure or cancer. Delegates gained insights from experts affiliated with King George's Medical University (KGMU), Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), and Era University.
