Tragic Snakebite Incident in Thrissur Claims Young Boy's Life
In a heartbreaking incident, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after being bitten by a snake while sleeping at his home in Kodaly Kadambode near Kodakara, Thrissur, on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Aljo Siljo. His older brother, Anosh Siljo, aged 10, was also bitten by the snake and is currently in a serious condition, receiving treatment at a hospital in Karukutty.
Initial Misdiagnosis and Delayed Response
The tragedy unfolded when the children complained of abdominal pain early on Sunday morning. Initially, the family suspected food poisoning, as they had attended a party and consumed food with relatives on Saturday evening. However, as the children's condition rapidly deteriorated, they were rushed to a local hospital in Kodaly around 5 a.m. It was there that doctors first suspected a snakebite, prompting an immediate transfer to a private hospital in Chalakkudy. Sadly, Aljo succumbed to the venom during the journey. Anosh was later shifted to another private facility in Karukutty for specialized care.
Discovery of the Venomous Snake
Following the incident, family friends and relatives conducted a thorough search of the victims' house and discovered a common krait snake in the room. This species is known for its highly venomous neurotoxic poison, which can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Expert Insights on Common Krait and Treatment
Dr. Biju S, a faculty member from the Livestock Production and Management Department at Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Pookode, highlighted the dangers posed by the common krait. "The common krait is among the 10 most poisonous snakes globally," he stated. "Its small size and thin teeth mean bites can sometimes go unnoticed, making early administration of anti-venom medicines absolutely critical for survival."
Echoing this urgency, Dr. Jayadeep C Menon of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi emphasized the importance of immediate medical intervention. "It is vital to keep the bitten area immobilized and ensure the person remains calm," he advised. "Using well-tucked mosquito nets can help prevent bites from nocturnal species like the common krait. In snake-prone areas, always assume a suspected bite is real and seek hospital care with anti-venom facilities immediately, avoiding unscientific remedies."
Preventive Measures to Reduce Snake Encounters
Dr. P O Nameer, a professor and head at the Centre for Wildlife Studies, College of Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University, stressed the importance of environmental cleanliness in preventing snake bites. "Maintaining clean surroundings is key," he noted. "Stranglers, vines near houses, and overhanging trees can attract snakes, posing significant threats to residents."
Background of the Victims
Aljo was a second-standard student at the Kadambode aided LP school, while Anosh is currently studying in Class IV at the same institution. The community is mourning the loss of young Aljo and praying for Anosh's recovery.
