Teen Dies After Eating Old Cut Watermelon: Safety Tips

A tragic incident in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district has highlighted the dangers of consuming cut watermelon left at room temperature for extended periods. A 15-year-old boy died and three other children fell ill after eating watermelon that had been sliced in the morning and consumed in the evening, according to a PTI report. Doctors suspect food poisoning and bacterial contamination, with forensic tests underway to confirm the exact cause.

The Incident

The children from Ghurkot village began vomiting and complained of severe discomfort shortly after eating the fruit. They were rushed to a nearby healthcare facility, where one child died during treatment. Dr S Kujur, civil surgeon at the Janjgir-Champa district hospital, stated, 'The watermelon was sliced on Monday morning and the children ate it in the evening. Vomiting started after eating it. One child died while the remaining three are stable.' Viscera of the deceased have been sent for examination.

What Research Says

A study titled Effect of time before storage and storage temperature on survival of Salmonella inoculated on fresh-cut melons investigated the impact of leaving cut melons at room temperature (about 22 degrees C) before refrigeration. The study found that populations of Salmonella, aerobic bacteria, yeast, mold, and Pseudomonas were significantly higher in melons left out for up to 5 hours before refrigeration compared to those refrigerated immediately. Holding contaminated cut melon at 22 degrees C for 3 hours or more before refrigeration increased the risk of Salmonella proliferation, especially if later stored at abusive temperatures.

Key Safety Tips for Cut Watermelon

  • Wash the outer surface before cutting to prevent knife transfer of germs from rind to fruit.
  • Avoid pre-cut melons; buy whole fruits to reduce contamination risk.
  • Refrigerate cut melon within 2 hours and consume within 2–3 hours. Discard if it smells sour, feels slimy, or tastes fizzy.

General Rules for Storing Cut Fruits

  • Refrigerate within 2 hours of cutting.
  • Use airtight containers as per FSSAI guidelines to keep fruits fresh and prevent contamination.
  • Store separately from strongly scented foods, as cut fruits produce aroma that can affect other items.
  • Consume within 2–3 hours for best taste and safety.
  • Avoid leaving cut fruits uncovered both outside and in the refrigerator.

Following these simple rules can prevent foodborne illnesses and ensure safe enjoyment of summer fruits.
