Kapurthala Village Stunned by Dual Drug Deaths Within Hours
The rural community of Raipur Arayian in Kapurthala district, Punjab, is grappling with profound grief and shock after two young men, both struggling with drug addiction, died within hours of each other on Thursday. This devastating incident comes merely two days after a family from nearby Sultanpur Lodhi lost their fifth son to narcotics, casting a stark light on the escalating drug menace plaguing the region.
A Day of Tragedy Unfolds in Raipur Arayian
According to villagers, both deceased individuals were aged between 30 and 31 years old and had previously undergone treatment at de-addiction centers in attempts to overcome their substance abuse issues. The first victim, identified as Balbir Singh Billa, was cremated by the community in the afternoon. In a heartbreaking turn of events, just a couple of hours later, another youth known as Shali also succumbed, sending waves of anguish through the village.
Personal Stories of Struggle and Isolation
Panchayat member Darshan Singh, who lived in Billa's neighborhood, provided poignant details about the first victim's life. "He was working as a laborer and was deeply addicted," Singh revealed. "Billa lived alone after his parents passed away and his wife left him due to his addiction problems. His sister had arranged for him to receive treatment at de-addiction centers at least twice, but unfortunately, he relapsed each time."
Billa's employer, Sunny, a mason from the same village, discovered the tragic scene. "I arrived at his house around 8 am to take him to work," Sunny recounted. "The gate was locked from inside, and he didn't respond to my calls or knocking. After scaling the boundary wall, I found him lying in the kitchen with a syringe nearby. It appeared he had died several hours earlier." The villagers proceeded with his cremation that afternoon.
Second Death Compounds Community Trauma
Village Sarpanch Varinder Kumar Prashar described the surreal moment when he encountered the second victim. "I was returning from Billa's cremation when I saw Shali looking extremely unwell while riding pillion on a motorcycle, being taken to his home," Prashar stated. "I immediately called his uncle, urging them to take him to a hospital. Shortly after, I received the devastating news that he too had died."
Former village sarpanch Stephen, a relative of Shali, provided additional context. "The family rushed him to a hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead," Stephen explained. "Shali had been working in Mumbai with his uncle, who operates as a labor contractor, and had returned home approximately twenty days earlier. He had previously received de-addiction treatment and had supposedly quit drugs. We have no idea when or how he fell back into this deadly habit."
Police Investigation and Arrests
Bholath DSP Karnail Singh detailed the circumstances surrounding Shali's death based on statements from the victim's parents. "His father reported that four youths from the same village took Shali from his home around 11:30 am," the DSP said. "When he returned, he appeared severely under the influence of drugs. Upon questioning, Shali admitted his friends had given him narcotics. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead."
Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the four individuals named by Shali's father. The main accused, identified as Sawan, has already been arrested in connection with the incident.
Official Responses and Broader Concerns
Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora confirmed that Billa's family had no suspicions regarding foul play in his death and had proceeded with the cremation. The senior police official made a public appeal, urging citizens to come forward with information about drug peddlers operating in their areas to help combat the crisis.
Panchayat member Harvinder Singh Bajwa expressed grave concern about the village's deteriorating situation due to drug abuse. "The condition in our village has become alarming because of drugs," Bajwa emphasized, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and support systems.
This double tragedy in Raipur Arayian follows the heartbreaking loss of a fifth son to drugs in a Sultanpur Lodhi family just days earlier, painting a grim picture of Punjab's ongoing struggle with substance abuse. The consecutive deaths have intensified calls for more effective de-addiction programs, stronger law enforcement against drug trafficking, and comprehensive community support mechanisms to prevent further loss of young lives to this devastating epidemic.
