Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Two Teenagers in Jamshedpur
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in the industrial city of Jamshedpur on Thursday when two teenage boys lost their lives after drowning in the Kharkai river. The tragedy occurred in the adjoining town of Adityapur, sending shockwaves through the local community and highlighting the dangers of unsupervised water activities.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Three Class IX students from Central Public School (CPS Adityapur) had ventured to a dam over the Kharkai river at Asangi, located within the jurisdiction of the RIT police station. The boys had gone to the water body with the intention of taking a bath during what should have been a routine day.
According to eyewitness accounts, Raunak Bhardwaj (15) and Godwin Thomas (15) jumped into the river while their friend, Prashant Kumar, waited on the edge, preparing to join them. In a moment of sheer horror, Prashant observed his two companions struggling in the deep water before they disappeared beneath the surface.
"I tried to call people for help, but they couldn't be saved," a distraught Prashant later told media personnel, describing the helplessness he felt as he watched the tragedy unfold before his eyes.
Rescue Operation and Recovery
Local authorities immediately launched a rescue operation upon receiving information about the incident. Sanjiv Kumar Singh, the in-charge of RIT police station, confirmed that after extensive efforts spanning several hours, the bodies of both teenagers were recovered late in the evening.
The prolonged rescue operation involved multiple agencies and local volunteers who worked tirelessly to locate the missing boys in the challenging river conditions. The recovery brought a somber conclusion to what had been a day of frantic searching and desperate hope.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
This tragic incident has raised serious questions about water safety measures in the region, particularly concerning unsupervised access to rivers and dams by young people. The Kharkai river, which flows through the industrial belt of Jharkhand, has witnessed similar tragedies in the past, prompting calls for better safety infrastructure and awareness campaigns.
The loss of two young lives from the same educational institution has left the Central Public School community in mourning. School authorities and local education officials are expected to review safety protocols and implement preventive measures to avoid such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
Local residents have expressed their grief over the untimely deaths of the teenagers, with many calling for increased vigilance and warning systems along vulnerable water bodies in the Kolhan region.
